This is the just the sixth year for the Baltimore Buddy Walk®. We are very excited to again have the walk downtown this year, so that we can spread the word to more people. The 3.21M run will be kicking off before the walk. I will be doing both if anyone would like to join me.
The Buddy Walk® was established to promote acceptance and inclusion of people with Down syndrome and celebrate awareness. We are so lucky to have had many trailblazers ahead of us. As a result of their hard work, Wade is attending Fifth grade in the fall in an inclusive classroom, alongside his twin sister Ellee. The NDSS was integral in the passage of the Achieving a Better Life Experience (ABLE) act. This will enable us to save for future quality of life expenses for Wade, including college - should he so choose. I had so much fun taking Wade and Ellee to Virginia Tech (pic above). They both asked whether they would be able to go there one day. I want to make that possible.
For every step we take and every dollar we raise, we are helping to create a culture that fully includes the more than 400,000 Americans with Down syndrome. We have seen so many benefits from the dollars raised by the Buddy Walk already. In addition to family events, I have attended seminars to better understand how to navigate the educational goals for Wade. As with any community, peer support is so vital to understanding specific needs. Your support helps us grow stronger and celebrate our friends and loved ones who happen to have that extra chromosome.
